All artists beginning their carrier need to focus on learning the lay-of-the-land in terms of the business in which now find themselves. In a global art economy it is not merely enough to have talent. The artist has to have active involvement in publicity. The artist must have an awareness of opportunities in the form of grants, exhibition spaces and sources of auxiliary income in order to sustain a viable practice. I believe that while art education is rewarding for students who make an effort to engage with its various courses, there is a dearth of education included that properly prepares young artists for the realities of, what is today, an extremely competitive, multi-billion dollar industry
